Conventional research strongly suggests that our ancestor, Thomas Hill, was the son of William Hill and Hannah Bridges and that Joab Hill was also in this family. (For documentation, see Migration of the Hill Family)  DNA testing by the Hill DNA Project shows, however, that Thomas and Joab did not have the same ancestry! A search through the files of FTDNA revealed that the DNA of Thomas Hill is a 25/25 match with a descendant of Thomas Grogan (c.1727) of Ireland who had migrated to America and settled in what is now Rockingham Co., NC by the time Thomas Hill was born. We cannot conclude that Thomas Grogan was his father for there were other Grogans in Rockingham Co. at that time. There is reason to conclude, however, that Thomas Hill had Grogan ancestry. Nevertheless, Thomas Hill somehow became a part of the family of William Hill and Hannah Bridges. They raised and nurtured him to adulthood and he adopted the Hill name, so this web page will treat him as their son.
